Ich habe eine Wiki-Seite fertiggestellt die unsere Lehren aus dem diesjährigen Event zusammenführt – und die auch anderen Gruppen als Anhaltspunkt dienen kann, wie es gehen kann und worauf man achten sollte.
We are doing our event in one of Kiels suburbs called „Mettenhof“. It is one of the few suburbs in Kiel who has lots of high-rise appartment buidlings. The name „Mettenhof“ is from the year 1670 named after the owner of a farm who was called „Meta von der Wisch“. 1937-1939 a stellement with simple houses for workers were built.
After the World War II Mettenhof became the focus in the search for new building ground. 1960 it was sold to „Neue Heimat“ (a union owned housing cooperative). 1963 it was amalgamed by the city of Kiel with 526 residents. 1965 the construction of the new Mettenhof was started. The plan was to end with appartments for 40.000 residents. As the housing market did not need as much room the plans where changed to only give space for 21.000 residents. Today around 19 thousand Kieler citizens live in Mettenhof alone (Kiel has 236.000 citizens). Mettenhof had many ideas in common with the Garden city movement – like many new suburbs in Germany during the 50s to 70s. See also an old article in german about how the first citizens moved to Mettenhof in the 60s: „In Mettenhof ziehen die ersten Mieter ein“.
Mettenhof has continuously been a suburb with social problems like high crime rate – and the architecture did not attract many new citizens. Education and culture is a key issue – and as such the Software Freedom Day in Mettenhof may also send some new impulses. As teachers told me Linux is not a big topic in most schools in Kiel. Often computer are used more for running Educational software and not necessarily to teach programming. And also often computers are identified with Windows, Word and Excel. We invited teachers of 22 schools from the Kiel area – and we hope that at least some will find their way on a saturday to our event. If we get 50 visitors we are happy – Actually we could not really plan to have more due to our circumstances. Kiel is a university city and besides Karlsruhe one of the cities in Germany who did provide internet outside universities and corporations for everybody though the Toppoint e.V.. Kiel has lost momentum in the last 10 years when it comes to free software and Internet „progressiveness“ – but we are here to change that (again).
Our venue is the largest school in Mettenhof – we cooperate with the Realschule im BZM, which is one of four schools itn the complex. The venue is, as it says, equipped for the disabled. On 10th and 11th of October there is also another yearly event: Kieler Linuxtage (with 500 visitors last year) which is even older than the Software Freedom Day. Maybe next year we will be able to cooperate again. So our event might also be a run up for this larger event. Enough for now. I’ll keep you updated.
